On June 23, 2025, the Japan-flagged cargo vessel "Morning Midas" sank in the Pacific Ocean after burning for nearly 20 days. The ship was carrying over 3,100 vehicles when the fire, which started on the deck, became uncontrollable.
After the fire broke out, crew members attempted to extinguish the flames and issued emergency alerts.Despite extensive efforts, severe structural damage led to the ship sinking in waters over 5,000 meters deep, near 24°N latitude. No casualties have been reported.
The incident has raised global concern over vehicle shipping safety and maritime fire response systems.Experts suggest enhancing automatic fire suppression technologies and improving management of flammable cargo to prevent similar disasters in the future.
