A small electrical fire broke out inside a server room of a technology company in Sydney, Australia. Overheating from a power distribution unit ignited plastic wiring insulation, triggering smoke alarms.
The on-site safety officer quickly grabbed a 5kg carbon dioxide (CO₂) fire extinguisher. He aimed the horn at the base of the flame and discharged the CO₂. The fire was fully extinguished within seconds.
Investigators later confirmed that CO₂ was the perfect choice for this incident. CO₂ is non-conductive and leaves no residue. It put out this Class B flammable liquid fire and Class E live electrical fire without damaging expensive servers and data equipment.
Fire officials remind the public: CO₂ extinguishers are NOT suitable for solid combustible fires like wood and paper, because the flame may re-ignite after CO₂ gas disperses.
Autumn and winter bring dry conditions. Please remain vigilant on fire safety for a happy and healthy life every day.
