Massive Straw Bale Fire At Former RAF Airfield (Nottinghamshire)

On July 13, firefighters were dispatched to Wigsley Old Airfield (formerly RAF Newton) near Nottinghamshire to contain a massive blaze involving approximately 12,000 tonnes of straw bales and standing corn.

 

At the height of the incident, ten fire engines, a water bowser, command units, and rural firefighting vehicles were engaged.Crews worked overnight, gradually reducing response to three engines as firebreaks were established.Authorities warned residents to keep windows closed due to lingering smoke.

 

Station Manager Jack Makepeace stated that firefighters will remain on scene for several days to fully extinguish and investigate the cause.No injuries have been reported.Local residents have been advised to steer clear of the area until the blaze is fully contained.
